Five Day Highlands of Scotland Tour

For those with a little more time to relax and enjoy the hospitality for which Scotland is famous. Wonderful scenery, thrilling history and superb food.

Day 1

Gleneagles Hotel

Meet your chauffeur at your hotel, or on arrival at Edinburgh or Glasgow Airport, and discuss the tour, so that any thoughts and interests you have may be included. Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dunfermline, birthplace of Andrew Carnegie, the picturesque fishing villages of Fife, Falkland Palace, St Andrews, home of golf and of Scotland's oldest University, Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument with its associations with the surrounding "Braveheart" country – some or all are there for you.

Overnight: Gleneagles Hotel, Perthshire.

Day 2

Depart at your leisure, totally relaxed and ready to enjoy some of the following. Crieff, with time to visit the famous crystal factory or Glenturret Distillery (or both – it is your tour). Perth, gateway to the highlands. Glamis Castle, ancestral home of the late HM The Queen Mother. Kirriemuir, the birthplace of JM Barrie. Then a magnificent drive through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery to Balmoral Castle, the Royal family's home on Deeside before arriving on the edge of the Granite City, Aberdeen.

Overnight: Marcliffe Hotel, Aberdeen.

Day 3

Boath House Hotel

Once again depart at your leisure with time for a little shopping in Ballater, where almost all of the shops are "by Royal Appointment" bearing crests of members of the Royal Family on the walls. Then across the highest road in Britain between Cock Bridge and Tomintoul before arriving at the Victorian Spa town of Grantown-on-Spey. The River Spey runs through the town and along the banks of this river are many of the most famous Scotch Whisky distilleries. Dufftown, while only small has seven distilleries and a visit to at least one can be arranged if required. From there travel north to the Moray Forth coast to the outskirts of Nairn and your hotel.

Overnight: Boath House Hotel, Auldearn, by Nairn.

Day 4

Inverlochy Castle Hotel

After a quiet and restful night you may like to spend much of the day in the Inverness area starting with a trip to Culloden Battlefield, site of the last battle on British soil in April 1746. Close by are Clava Cairns, prehistoric burial sites over 1000 years old. The later part of the day is through the Great Glen passing Loch Ness and Castle Urquhart, perched on the steep banks of the deepest loch in Europe. It is no wonder that the Loch Ness Monster has managed to evade detection, but you might just be lucky.

Overnight: Inverlochy Castle Hotel, Fort William.

Day 5

Your tour can finish in Glasgow or Edinburgh and this last day will include a journey through the magnificent and awe inspiring Glencoe, the site of the slaughter, in 1682 of 38 members of Clan Donald. Across Rannoch Moor with its wild open spaces then through Glen Orchy and down to Loch Fyne and Inveraray Castle, home of the Duke of Argyle. You might like to sample some local sea food at the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar on your way south before driving the length of Loch Lomond and taking leave of your chauffeur.
